[Arirang] Multi-talented K-stars expand into other genres

And now for a look at the arts and culture landscape here in Korea.
Let's bring in Yim Yoonhee, who joins us today with a look at some multi-talented stars.

Good afternoon.

Now, Korean stars are known for showing off their talents in multiple fields, ranging from singing and dancing to acting. And you've gone some of the most recent examples today.

That's right.
It's amazing how the stars these days seem to be able to do just about anything.
Today we look at a few stars who have been showing their versatility.
Let's take a look.

Park Myung-soo, sometimes referred to as "The Great Park, is one of Korea's favorite personalities for a number of reasons.
He's a popular comedian, but has also been successful with other endeavors, including his recently released single.
The song is inspired by none other than the ever-so-popular Korean street food, tteokbokki.
It's only fitting that the comedian has dedicated an entire song to the spicy rice cake dish.
Park collaborated with singer Kim Ye-rim for the song, which has shot up the music charts.

Another artist showing his talents in multiple fields is actor Yoo Yeon-seok.
He first debuted in a small movie role, but after starring in hits like "A Werewolf Boy" and the cult hit "Reply 1994," he's now a regular on the screen.
Yoo can be seen in dramas, movies, and reality shows, but on August 1st, he'll be breaking into a new field, this time as a photographer.
In response to his photography, he said that more important than having a dream, is to not forget the dream.
His gallery, titled, "Ah-ee," holds double meaning.
It translates as "child," but also refers to the English word it sounds like, "eye."
Yoo hopes to bring attention to the children in Africa through his exhibition, and plans on donating all proceeds to helping them achieve their dreams.

It's great when stars use their talents to do good for the world, and I known Yoo Yeon-seok is one of them.

Right, and they're not only multi-talented; many of them have such big hearts.
Yoo Yeon-seok will actually be donating all the proceeds of the event to support children in Africa, children whose circumstances make it very difficult for them to realize their dreams.
He's actually been quite active in supporting children in Africa, and will also be publishing a book about it.

So let's stick with this theme of multi-talented stars. I understand you have a couple more for us.

Right, so I've said this more times than I can recall, but musicals really do have the advantage of casting K-pop stars.
It brings in the audience, the ratings, so this trend of star-studded musicals is really picking up not only in Korea, but abroad as well.
Take a look.

Korea's first instrumental idol band, FT Island" has been a fixture atop the charts over the years, but member Lee Hong-ki is showing that he has another trick up his sleeve.
The lead vocalist was cast as Dracula in the musical "Vampire," which is set to tour Japan starting in August.
It's been five years since he's been on the musical stage, but his fans are more confident than ever in his abilities, as tickets for the first of seven showings have already been completely sold out.

Over in Korea, the musical "Zorro" is set to re-take the stage starting next month.
It hasn't been seen since 2011, and much like it's debut showing, the musical once again boasts a star-studded cast.
AOA’s ChoA will be playing the role of Luisa, the main female lead and Zorro’s love interest.
Meanwhile, Shinee's Key, BEAST's Yoseob, and Wheesung will take turns playing the role of the title character - the man in the mask, Zorro.
With that much star power, it'll be tough for fans to choose which show to attend.

Another big production with some of the biggest names in Hallyu.
Tell us more about the musical, "Zorro."

"Zorro" the musical is based on a novel that takes place in a California desert and features music by the Gipsy Kings, so some Spanish influence there and you'll also hear a bit of fun, salsa music.
The performance itself has quite a bit of action and sword fighting scenes.
Although the character of Diego, or Zorro, is most commonly associated with Antonio Banderas, at least in the modern age as he portrayed him on the big screen, I think the musical version will be popular here in Korea, as it features some of the biggest stars in Hallyu.

Thank you for that report.

My pleasure.
